The reward for becoming a COH is the personal satisfaction of knowing you have achieved the highest standard in Australia and you are recognised for your knowledge and experience by professional industry peers and colleagues.

Applicants must be a Full Members of the AIOH, have completed relevant tertiary studies and have been working in the field of occupational hygiene or one of its specialist branches for more than five years in a professional capacity.

COHs must be able to demonstrate on an ongoing basis to the AIOH Council and Certification Board that a satisfactory level of professional competence is maintained.

To qualify for COH an applicant must pass an oral examination and in some cases a written examination. This written examination (if required) is sat prior to the oral examination which is held on the weekend prior to the annual AIOH conference in December each year.

Certified Occupational Hygienists (COH)® are entitled to use the post-nominals COH.

Members who have attained Certification have:


Qualification

Completed relevant tertiary studies in occupational hygiene or related field.


Professional Experience

Been working in the field of occupational hygiene or one of its specialist branches for more than five years in a professional capacity.


Knowledge & Skills

Demonstrated to the AIOH Council that they have achieved a satisfactory level of professional knowledge, competence, communication skills and knowledge of Australian OHS legislation through successful completion of an oral examination.


Professional Development

Continue to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to excellence and maintaining their professional currency through ongoing professional development.


IOHA Associations

From 1 August 2020, occupational hygienists with certification from other IOHA associations are welcome to apply for the AIOH COH as there is mutual recognition of their qualifications and experience. This is consistent with the requirements for certification with other IOHA associations. There will be a requirement to sit the oral examination.

Member associations

An examination fee will apply prior to sitting the oral examination. COHs are also required to be Full Members of the AIOH.
